RENOVATIONS • EXTENSIONS • ADDITIONS / MOUNT COLAH

More room for life in Mount Colah.

You have the location. Now imagine a home that fits the way you want to live: a kitchen where everyone can gather, a quieter place to work, or bedrooms that give a growing family room to breathe. Elite Additions helps Mount Colah homeowners explore renovations, extensions and first-floor additions, starting with what matters most to you.

A railway suburb with more than one housing story.

The station came before the suburb you know.

Mount Colah’s railway station opened in 1887 under the shorter name Colah. The railway is one part of the story; later waves of housing helped shape the neighbourhood around it. [1]

Who built the postwar neighbourhood?

The NSW Housing Commission built homes here in the 1960s, while villa-style housing followed on the western side in the 1980s. That history helps explain why local homes can have very different layouts and renovation possibilities. It does not identify the builder of an individual house. [1]

A familiar golf course with an earlier beginning.

Asquith Golf Club’s course is actually in Mount Colah. Nine holes opened in June 1938 on land associated with Mr Salmond in the 1860s; the course expanded to 18 holes in 1964. Familiar places can hold a much longer story than their name suggests. [1]

Make the next chapter feel like it belongs.

If your house has a compact kitchen, separate living rooms or an awkward route to the garden, start with the way you would like to use those spaces. An extension could create a more generous family area; a carefully planned internal renovation might make the rooms you already have work better. Bring any original drawings so we can understand the existing structure before exploring changes.

Keep the address. Rethink the space.

Separate houses made up 83.9% of Mount Colah’s occupied private dwellings in the 2021 Census. For a detached home, that opens an important design conversation: can the existing layout work harder, would a ground-floor extension improve the connection to the garden, or is building up worth investigating? The right answer depends on your particular house and block.

Bring the family together

Rework a closed-off kitchen and living area so cooking, eating and spending time together feel connected. We consider the structure and services behind the walls as well as the finishes.

Create a better garden connection

Explore a rear or side extension that makes room for everyday living without treating the backyard as leftover space. Sunlight, level changes and usable outdoor areas belong in the same conversation.

Find room upstairs

A first-floor addition can be an option when extra bedrooms matter and you want to preserve outdoor space. Stair placement and the existing structure need attention from the beginning.

Plan around your block, not a generic floor plan.

Mount Colah is in Hornsby Shire. Start with your address, a survey if you have one, and the changes you are considering. On a sloping block, we would look closely at how new floors meet the existing home, where excavation might be needed and how materials reach the work area. Mature trees, drainage and neighbouring homes can also shape a sensible design.

Know what matters for your address.

Check the address for bushfire mapping and any heritage listing before committing to a layout. These are property-specific checks.

DA, CDC and the next step for your Mount Colah home.

Ask early whether your proposed extension can follow complying development (CDC), or needs a development application (DA). Bring the address and any survey or drawings to the discussion. We can then identify the design and property questions that need professional assessment before you commit to a scope.

A CDC is a complying development certificate; a DA is a development application. Explore the NSW approval pathways and confirm what applies to your proposed work.

What shapes your budget and timing?

For a Mount Colah extension, access, excavation, existing floor levels and the amount of structural change can influence the budget as much as room size. Share any plans and your priorities so the initial discussion is about a realistic scope.

Timing also depends on design, approvals, selections and the agreed construction scope. We will discuss those stages in relation to your project.

Questions about building in Mount Colah.

Should we extend out or build up?

Start with the rooms you need and the outdoor space you want to keep. A first-floor concept needs a structural assessment and a workable staircase; a ground-floor extension needs a careful look at levels, setbacks and the garden. We can discuss which option is worth developing.

Does a bushland outlook mean our home has a particular BAL rating?

No. An outlook is not a bushfire assessment. Check the property’s mapping first; where relevant, a site-specific assessment establishes the requirements for the proposed work.

Can we speak to Scott before we have drawings?

Yes. Tell Scott what feels cramped or no longer works, your Mount Colah address and whether you have an approximate budget. If drawings are the next step, explore our design services as part of that discussion.
